Craftsmanship as a bridge between eras

This building was designed as the foundation to spread the culture of weaving and kimono by adding a flagship store combined with a gallery to the function of headquarters for the company HOSOO. Since the establishment of the textile industry in Nishijin in 1688, the company has been developing various projects which explore the possibilities of the Nishijin textile technique.

In capitalist societies with standardised products and mass consumption, craftsmanship was viewed as an old and tedious skill, and its weakened role in society was symbolized by the rapid reduction of the kimono market. However, given the great potential of crafts, We are taking the initiative to support people’s lives through the ages and beyond the limits of time by means of craftsmanship.

We enclosed the existing structure built 50 years ago in a new volume, composed of an external wall of rammed earth and black ink plaster, which gives the visitor a feeling of intimacy in a public space such as the reception. Despite the interior being concealed, pedestrians along the street are invited and drawn inside by a sudden opening in the exterior wall and by the flow of the gold leaf construction joints.

In the design, we wanted to express the inheritance of history not by a typical form of style, as would be expected in the townscape on the city block at the intersection of Ryogaemachi-street and Anekoji-street, but by using the material textures which have been used historically in Kyoto, such as black ink plaster, gold leaf and earth walls. We paid attention on how to express the different experience of “receding” and “drawing near” so that from a distance the building presents a quiet exterior, however, a closer inspection reveals an expressive loquacity through the use of delicate details and textures.

Through the details of texture and the direct sense of touch, objects stimulate and enrich the sensibility of humankind. In the same way as wearing a beautiful kimono makes us feel radiant, crafts have the materialistic power to act on the spirit which goes beyond mere pragmatic functions, while also providing the practicality of everyday life.

The production system

Instead of commissioning the entire construction to one single contractor, we personally assembled a special team of various craftsmen, each one with a different set of skills, we put our efforts in re-questioning the making process further in order to widen the horizons for new productions systems. This design concept also represents a counter-argument towards contemporary society, where production options are becoming narrower due to the fact that people only look at the finished product and involuntarily transform the production process and craftsmanship into a black box as a consequence.

Thus, the building itself connects different crafts, from the light penetrating through the Nishijin textile FRP glass (NISHIJIN reflected), made by uniting the most advanced technologies of Nishijin fabric and FRP, down to the Nishijin fabrics, the plaster work, the blacksmithing, the leaf fixing, the Wilton carpets, the mounting of frames and the furniture, which all work together in the same place.
